Talk About Talking

So I'm back in therapy as of last Friday. Lots to discuss and feeling good about being open about all of it. I'm ready to get this life going and taking it where it needs to be.

The therapist suggested that from now on, 3 times a week, I should start small -random conversations with strangers I meet while running errands.

Yesterday (Saturday) I went to the pharmacy to get my perscription for Zoloft filled. It's suppose to help me with my social anxiety. Anyways, the only conversation I had was with one of the women at the pharmacy who told me a few facts t know about the medication since it was the first time I would be taking it. I also smiled at an elderly woman who was waiting I line in front of me.

I think the biggest chage I noticed was how conscious I was to the people around me and what was going on. Normally I space out and don't pay attention but I managed to stay focused and alert. i noticed the people around me, the conversations they were having, and also the objects and surroundings themselves.

Then I went to Popeyes to get some food and Karla, the woman at the cash register, took my order. We didn't converse, but i remembered her name and when I was handed my bag of food I looked her in the eye and said thank you fully acknowledging her and what she had done for me. I was also aware of the other people who were around in the restaurant enjoying their food.

All in all good for attempts 2 of 3 or 4.

Thursday

Didn't go to Toastmasters yesterday. My speech may be next week. Talking about the wonderful world of clay. I have 4 doctor visit this week. One Monday because I couldn't hear out of my right ear. The doctor visit wasn't successful and I have to go back tommorrow. Had a visit with a psychiatrist to see if there was any medication i could take to overcome my issues with socializing. I'll be taking some new medicine soon. Tommorrow I'm going in for ear hearing part 2 and then meeting with a life coach later that day. A lot of doctors and psychiatrists this week. Whatever it takes to progress.

Thoughts

My head says, “Who cares?” but then my heart whispers, “You do, stupid.” ~Random Quote I Found

I ask this… If there should be an assassination, I would hope that five, ten, one hundred, a thousand would rise. I would like to see every gay lawyer, every gay architect come out. If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door… And that’s all. I ask for the movement to continue. Because it’s not about personal gain, not about ego, not about power… it’s about the “us’s” out there. Not only gays, but the Blacks, the Asians, the disabled, the seniors, the us’s. Without hope, the us’s give up - I know you cannot live on hope alone, but without it, life is not worth living. So you, and you, and you… You gotta give em’ hope… you gotta give em’ hope.

Toastmasters Wednesday

Best speech today (for me) was Alex's. He spoke about baseball, a subject I'm not that thrilled about or familiar with, which shows just how great his speech was. The purpose of his speech was body movement. He showed different stances baseball players have used to take advantage of hitting the ball. It's was funny and informative. I especially liked the fact that he used a light-saber as a prop for a baseball bat.

Next week I have to give a speech on organization. I'm thinking of using clay as my subject and coming in wearing the cover my dad gave me to wear so I wouldn't get clay on my clothes. I might also bring in some tools to talk about. We shall see . . .

Yesterday I went to the store to get some ingredients to make beef stroganoff. Turns out it uses sour cream, which is weird, but works. When I was at the check out stand the cashier was encouraging the woman in front of me to donate some money to breast cancer. After she made a donation he announced it on the overhead speakers. I can't describe him, other than he was really bright, down to earth, and driven to raising money for the cause. I felt inspired and donated 2 dollars for the cause. He looked at me afterwords and sincerely said "Thank you, it really means a lot." Afterwords I felt bad that I didn't donate more. I wish more people like that existed. Just someone to tap you on the shoulder everyone once in a while and ask you to give a little to improve life.

My Religious Family Tree

This is a report I had to write on the religious history of my family. Pretty interesting . . .

Jessica Power
Nov. 11, 2008
Family Tree

Starting with my father’s side of the family, my grandfather Raymond Power’s grandparents on his mother’s side, the Hadelers, were German Lutherans and his grandparents on his father’s side, the Powers, were Baptists. Ray’s father, Robert Power, was born in Texas in 1888 and was Baptist and raised Ray as a Baptist when he was born in 1925 in California. My grandmother says that Ray had to read the Bible and go to church every Sunday as well as sometimes during the week. My grandmother says he was “over-churched” and when he was old enough to practice his own religion, he decided to become an agnostic.

My grandmother, Jean Hanssen, who was born in 1926, was raised Presbyterian. Her mother, Alice Kaerwer, lived in Minnesota and baptized Jean and her brother when they were two years old. They then moved to New York where they attended the Christian Scientist’s church. When I asked my grandmother why she went to that church even though she was Presbyterian, she told me it was because the church was closest to her home and if it had been a Catholic church then they would have been Catholics. When Jean was 12 she and her family moved to California where she then officially became Presbyterian. When she married Ray the Presbyterian Church was only 10 minutes from where they lived. Today, the same church is only 3 minutes from her retirement community. She does not attend church every Sunday and is not particularly religious, though she does go to church on special holidays like Easter. Jean also baptized all four of her children, my father included, when they were young.

My father and his siblings were all raised Presbyterian. Today, my father, Fred Power, still remains a Presbyterian. He owns a Bible, though he never reads it and he does attend church, but only on special holidays to make my grandmother happy. My Aunt Nancy, who lives in Livermore, California, is a lapsed Presbyterian. She was attending church occasionally, but due to issues involving her divorce, she no longer attends the church she was going to. My Aunt Carol was a Presbyterian, but two years after her husband Bill passed away she announced that she had decided to become a lesbian. The news was accepted by my family and Carol is now a Metropolitan Community Church pastor in Corpus Christi, Texas. She is very religious and reads the Bible everyday and recently came to California to help fight against Proposition 8.

My uncle Brad who lives in Boston, Massachusetts is a Unitarian Universalist. The religion he practices emphasizes finding truth in different religions and being open-minded and acceptant to other people’s beliefs. The Unitarian Universalist church is headquartered in Boston, which may be one reason he chose it. Another that was suggested to me was the fact that it is “good for his kids”, which I think means showing them different views on religion. Uncle Brad and my Aunt Mary recently adopted two girls from Ethiopia who are six and seven years old. They attend the church regularly and the girls go there after school and sing in the choir. I think it was meant to be a way for them to meet other kids and gain a sense of community.
On my mother’s side of the family, my grandmother Lee Gail Wheling was born in 1942 in San Francisco. Gail’s mother, Evelyn Anna Flohrs, was born in 1914 in Minnesota and was a Lutheran. Gail’s father, Clarence Wheling, was born in Chicago in 1896 and was also Lutheran. My grandmother could not remember her grandparents well, but I do know that her grandparents on her father’s side were born in Germany in 1859 and 1869. Gail said that her parents went to church rarely and joked that if they “went in a church, it would probably fall down”. Gail herself does not regularly attend church or read the Bible, though she is spiritual.

My grandfather on my mom’s side, Rolla “Bud” Emerson Hunt, was born in 1939 and was raised Baptist. His father, Rolla Emerson Hunt who was born in 1902 in Iowa, and his mother, Emma Elizabeth Ulrich who was born in 1905 in Colorado were both affiliated with the Methodist church. Bud’s two sisters Marlyn and Georgia were following the Catholic faith. Marlyn changed to the Episcopal Church after she married her second husband who was a minister in an Episcopal church. Bud and Gail later got married in an Episcopal church. Bud does not read the Bible to my knowledge and I don’t think he attends church often.

My mother, Julie Willey, was baptized in the Lutheran church when she was young. She says she has attended many churches throughout her life and believes in no one particular denomination. She does say she believes in God and prays to him often. She had a recent accident in which she was bucked off a horse and would have died if she was not wearing a helmet. Throughout her life, she never wore a helmet when riding a horse and believes what happened to her that day to be a miracle by a guardian angel. She has since talked about God often, though she doesn’t and hasn’t to my knowledge, read the Bible. She also still does not go to church. She says she believes you can pray anytime and anywhere and you don’t need a church to do it. She says her beliefs are just “Christian beliefs” and the churches she does go to are plain “Christian churches”.

It seems like, when tracing though the farthest roots of my ancestry, that most of my grandparent’s grandparents were very religious. Those grandparents who came from Germany were distinctly Lutheran, which is not surprising considering that is where Martin Luther made his “Letters to German Nobility”. The Baptist parents of my grandfathers Ray and “Bud” also seemed intently religious, since both grandchildren managed to be baptized and raised in that tradition, though neither practices it now. I think that trend is similar to what Thomas Jefferson wrote in his “Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom”. People shouldn’t have the right to force religion onto others and when they do, those being forced often turn away from that religion. I also noticed that going down through the lines the parents of my grandparents tended to become more lax in general to their religions. My grandmother Jean’s mother baptized her as Presbyterian, but they only attended church to become a part of the community, and it didn’t really matter what denomination it was. Gail’s parents were Lutherans but rarely attended church. Then my grandparents themselves do not seem to be that tied to any particular religion, accept my grandmother Jean. My grandfather Ray was an agnostic, and my grandmother Gail and my grandfather Bud don’t go to church or practice any rituals. Even Jean who is proud to be a Presbyterian does not practice her faith by going to church often or reading the Bible.

As far as my parents, aunts, and uncles are concerned, only two are relatively “religious”. My Uncle Brad attends church with his family, though it is less for the religious aspects and more for cultural and community- oriented reasons. My Aunt Carol is probably the most religious out of all the relatives I have. I believe that she is most religious because she has always been an active member of the church and has always carried a faith in God. My mother is also reasonably more religious than my other relatives, though it is in more of a spiritual sense.

I think location and marriage also have a lot to do with the reason some members of my family are more religious than others. My grandfather Ray’s father was born in Texas and was raised Baptist. I think Baptists in Texas were more diligent in their religion than maybe some other states, especially during the early 1900s. Ray however was raised in California. I think growing up in California and being raised as strictly in the Baptist faith as he was probably made Ray feel alienated by his religion and seen differently by a lot of people he knew. In my grandmother Jean’s case she was raised Presbyterian, but attending church and practicing the religion were probably not as important since she moved from Minnesota to New York to California and went to whatever church seemed closest. In my Uncle Brad’s case he also seemed to identify himself with the Unitarian Universalist Church because it was probably nearby and his wife and children felt comfortable there. My grandparents Bud and Gail were also married in an Episcopal church, although neither practiced that religion. Although marriage has played some small role in my families’ religious history, it seems location has played a bigger part.
As far as connecting to the readings, I think some of the patterns I see in my family’s past can relate to some of what we have read in class. For instance, I think my grandparent’s grandparents from Germany probably came to America believing it to be a place like John Winthrop described in “A Model of Christian Charity”. I think they felt it was a good place to come and practice their religion with people of similar faiths.

I think one of the reasons my German great- great- grandparents probably followed their practices and beliefs so stringently was because 1) they were raised in Germany were Lutheranism was founded and 2) in America they were probably clinging to their old customs and traditions since it gave them a sense of identity and place in their new country. This is very similar to what Mary Antin described in “The Promise Land”. Like Mary, my grandparents from Germany probably had difficulties keeping up their customs in an America that was far less religious than what they were use to. They probably abandoned some of their customs and only carried on the traditions they felt were most important.

I think the changes Mary had over her lifetime is very similar to the changes that occurred throughout the religious history of my family. The oldest generations were very settled and founded in their religion. Then as that religion was passed on and my family started moving more they began to let go of their beliefs and traditions for a more modern and convenient way of life. Now in the present day, their beliefs are mostly spiritual except for the few that, like Mary in the end, still cling to the customs and traditions of their faith.

David Hockney

Jessica Power (Me) ~ Elephant 2007

David Hockney ~Pearblossom Highway, 1986

I had a project to find an artist whose work is similar to mine and discuss his life via Power Point. Here is my Power Point notes:

Today I’m going to talk about David Hockney, is known as one of Britiains greatest artists and he has done work in arious mediums including drawing, oil painting, and photography.
Born 1937 Bradford, England.
• Raised in “radical working class family” Methodists, Sunday school, Jesus cartoons, no smoking or drinking, developed love for opera.
• 1953 Bradford school of art, gained a love for painting, disliked other classes wanted to go to the Regional College of Art in London.
• Sees artwork of contemporaries Francis Bacon, Picasso, Jackson Pollock and other abstract expressionists. Went against avant-garde trend of abstraction
• 1960s Artwork expressed poetry and beliefs. He began painting about his sexual orientation and would include words in his paintings like “unorthodox lover” and “queer”
1960s
We 2 boys together clinging together. His work was seen by some to be controversial because homosexuality was illegal in England at that time. In the early 1960s his work was narrative and tended to tell stories.
NEW SLIDE
• First trip to America in 1961. New York befriended Andy Warhol and Denis Hopper
• 1963 first solo exhibition in London
• First trip to California. Moved to Santa Monica. Started pool paintings that reflected the sunny laid-back lifestyle of California.
• 1964-67 Starts teaching at universities in Iowa, Colorado, LA, and Berkeley. While in Colorado he was inspired by Rocky Mountains which was later reflected in some of his works.
Bigger Splash 1967
Shows the kind o work he was doing at this time. California- inspired. Developed the naturalistic, realistic style he is most known for today. That same year he also met Peter Schlesinger, who became his romantic partner and inspiration for various photographs and paintings during that time.
1970s
Moves to Paris with Peter Schelsinger
Mr. and Mrs. Clark and Percy (1970-1971), naturalism -- that is, representing things as they were actually seen. His interest in photography grew. Hockney’s work tends to reflect and interest in perspective and painting reality.
1970’s continued
• Travels between California, New York, and France

Hockney’s first retrospective, David Hockney: Paintings, Prints and Drawings 1960
• Works on set designs for various Operas including The Rakes Progress and The Magic Flute

Fax machines and photo copiers . fascinated wanted to make work that was intended to be photocopied, laser-printed or faxed. "I thought, 'Ah, this is a telephone for the deaf!' " he said of discovering the fax machine. "But I quickly realized not only can I send notes, but I could send drawings. And I decided if you made drawings especially for a fax machine, you could make interesting things." The New York Times

• 2001 Completes book Secret Knowledge: Rediscovering the Lost Techniques of the Old Masters
• Works with BBC on a documentary about his findings

Hockney's fascination with the subject is contagious, and the book feels almost like a game with each analysis a "How'd they do that?" instead of a whodunit. While some may find the technical revelation a disappointment in terms of the idea of genius, Hockney is quick to point out that the use of optics does not diminish the immensity of artistic achievement. He reminds the reader that a tool is just a tool, and it is still the artist's hand and creative vision that produce a work of art. Mirrors and lenses.
• Focuses on creating watercolors centered around nature
2007 regarding the landscape with new eyes, a reassessment that intensified with the death of his mother in 1999. Back in Los Angeles, he began painting Yorkshire from memory; he settled there full time in 2005. In Mr. Hockney's eyes, his interest in his native landscape evolved naturally. He was born and raised in Bradford, a smoky Industrial Revolution-era metropolis in the western part of the county. Yet he has always had strong ties to the east: as a teenager he spent two summers stacking corn on a farm in Huggate. "It made me fall in love with this part of the world," he said. "I cycled all over it. And cycling, you really do realize it's quite hilly. It's not flat at all."
2012 Royal Academy in London new show.
Exploring computer art
Painted earlier this year using Photoshop iPhone
“Throughout his career, Hockney has made a series of abrupt changes of style, often associated with a change of materials or medium.” the dominant avant-garde trend was abstraction; he went against it by painting figuratively, often in bright colors and a primitivist style. "The ease with which he moves between the '60s and the present, his rebellious character and his refusal to be defined makes him very attractive to younger artists," Ms Iles said. 72 years old. Work is still changing and evolving. Art reflects his experiences. Never cared what others thought.

Chris Jordan (part 2)

Well I mentioned him a while ago in a previous post, but here's the 1 page report I gave on him:

Jessica Power
April 27, 2010
Thinking About Sustainability

Chris Jordan uses art as a means to depict statistics that most people would otherwise have a difficult time understanding. By duplication images representing anything from plastic bottles to packing peanuts and showing them on a large scale, people have a better visual indicator of the immense impact these products can have on the world in only a brief amount of time. In his image “Gyre” on his website www.chrisjordan.com , Jordan shows “2.4 million pieces of plastic, equal to the estimated number of pounds of plastic pollution that enter the world's oceans every hour”. The images of plastic are compiled to show one whole image that is a direct reference to Hokusai’s “Great Wave Off Kanagawa”. On one level the image “Gyre” is referring to the waves and how they can now be seen as completely littered by unfathomable amounts of plastic waste. On another level the image of the gyre also refers to a kind of chaotic storm which is how Jordan views the amount of plastic waste found in the Pacific Ocean. The culmination of these depictions leaves the viewer feeling overwhelmed and helpless –mush like you would if a giant wave was coming down on you. Only this isn’t a wave of water crashing down – it’s the knowledge of what people are doing to the environment and what reality we have created and now have to face.

Jonathan Barnbrook

I gave a Powerpoint Presntation with a partner on Jonathan Barnbrook last year. Here is my portion of the presentation w/o the slides:

“If you are a committed designer there is no separation between your beliefs, your work and the manner of their presentation.” Jonathan Barnbrook is a well acclaimed graphic designer who incorporates his views on politics, consumerism, war, and other social issues into his work. Barnbrook was born in Luton England in 1966. His interests in graphic design began at an early age and in 1982 he studied graphic design at Barnfield College in Luton. He then went on to get a degree at Central St. Martins in London in 1985. Around that time Barnbrook began to focus more and more on typography. In 1988 he got a Masters Degree at the Royal College of Art in London. In 1990, Barnbrook designed his first font which he called “Bastard”. His first commercial font was released in 1991 and his second commercial font, which was changed from the name “Manson” to “Mason”, was released in 1992. That same year he also started his first experiments in new areas of motion graphics after working with director Tony Kaye. And in 1997 Barnbrook set up his own font company called Virusfonts.

Barnbrook has wanted to be a graphic design since age 13. His early work focused mostly on creating various typefaces. The typography he made focused on controversial stereotypes involving religion, politics, and culture. The font names and the font faces reflected each concept Barnbook tried to convey. His font names include Bastard, Manson, Drone, False Idol, Doublethink, and Prozac. His fonts were met with both praise and criticism. In 1997 Barnbrook created a company called Virusfonts. LINK 1984, political figures, In 2004 he made an anti-Olympics pictogram font called “olympukes” on the day of the opening ceremonies. IMAGE The images on the left show scenes involving bribing judges, making fun of mascots, and “medals won through the use of pharmaceuticals”. The image on the right is called “Drowning in Advertising” and has a reference to the Coca -Cola wave.

“What I aim to do and, everyone should be like, is use of our job to help society, whether it is as little or as small as local work. Executing designs for social or local projects by applying pressure on politicians through creation of work to protest. All of these help to facilitate the course of change towards becoming better.” In every aspect and type of work Barnbrook does, the idea and goal behind each piece is to address issues in our society and inspire thoughts from individuals viewing his work to seek positive changes in life. He openly criticizes the norms aesthetics associated with commercialism and political propaganda. He wants to reveal truths that are hidden behind painted up signs and glossy magazines. He wants to show that there is more to graphic design than just “style”. That the message behind the design is most important and the way it is conveyed she be equally significant. There is meaning in the images and text that can stand for something that changes people’s perspectives and the way they perceive the world they live in.

Impact:
Because Barnbrook shows his work in places all over the world, and his impact has become international. His work is also recognized in both commercial and non-commercial spheres. He influences other graphic designers and encourages them to step out of the box and stand up for themselves instead of just doing whatever kind of advertisement a corporation wants them to do. But his work’s greatest impact is on the mindset of people who see his designs. He shares his work openly and unapologetically and pushes people to think and see beyond what is being broadcast in front of them. He does this through his fonts and his designs, and most recently the Barnbrook Bible.

Wednesday October 13

Well Toastmasters was today . . . I was the Grammarian. I'm going to be honest, grammarian is the crapiest card you can be dealt in toastmasters. It's like the Old Maid or the Queen of Spades. You have to watch for improper use of phrasing, which sucks because the only people who mess up on that are people who have English as a second language and occasionally leave things out or turn phrases improperly. Yo can still usually understand them though. Today a person left out a couple "a"s and "the"s before nouns.Big whoop. I felt bad calling her and another person out for their errors, because the peech was ultimately understandable. Then I got a slap on the wrist for mentioning them by name. Your suppose to give critics in a more general sense by saying "when using nouns remember to place "a"s and "the"s before them". But how are the specific people suppose to know you were talking about them so they can then pay attention to that the next time they give a speech? It's not like I'm calling them out saying: Epic Fail! You should give up speaking because you can't use phrases properly. We have to pay 25 cents every time we say "ummm" or "uhhh" and those people do get mentioned by name. (I'm down 25 cents today). Nobody holds it against them. It's just something they need to work on and take into consideration.

Anyways, best speeches today were Roger who gave his first icebreaker and described what it was like living in San Jose in the 50s. Apparently before Google and the internet moved in, there were a whole bunch of fruit orchards and the city was known for them. My dad often mentions that he liked hanging out in the orchards before they became office buildings. Kind of sad that we lost all that natural land and fruit.

The second speech was Jeff's. He talked about where common phrases we use today come from. Turns out Shakespeare was quite the quotist. He actually came up with the term "breaking the ice". The Bible also had some handy ones like "the blind leadingthe blind", which is interesting for reasons I won't go into . . . A lot of other phrases came from on-the-job and old habbits people used in the 1800s.

Thoughts for the Day

"I’m the one that has to die when it’s time for me to die, so let me live my life, the way I want to."

~Jimi Hendrix

What ensures a species survival is not determined by its strength or its intelligence, but by its ability to adapt to change.

"When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life."

~John Lennon

To laugh is to risk appearing a fool,
To weep is to risk appearing sentimental.
To reach out to another is to risk involvement,
To expose feelings is to risk exposing your true self.
To place your ideas and dreams before a crowd is to risk their loss.
To love is to risk not being loved in return,
To live is to risk dying,
To hope is to risk despair,
To try is to risk failure.
But risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.
The person who risks nothing, does nothing, has nothing, is nothing.
He may avoid suffering and sorrow,
But he cannot learn, feel, change, grow or live.
Chained by his servitude he is a slave who has forfeited all freedom.
Only a person who risks is free.

William Arthur Ward

Wednesday at Toastmasters

We had a guest peaker today who talked about how to pronounce English clearly when you're not a native English speaker. It was interesting to see the ways we speak without really pausing to think about exactly how we are saying things. It's probably because we focus more on what we are saying. I'm glad English is my native language because with the idioms and the slang and the tenses it is the hardest language to learn. I mean, think about it. We have to take at least 14 years of English classes and there are still words we don't know.

The table topic of the day was traveling. At first I thought, I've only traveled 3 times in my life: Mexico, Scotland, and a cruise through the Baltic. Then I remembered my trips to Oregon, southern California, Arkansas, and Missouri. I have traveled a decent amount. I didn't get up to talk about any of it though. Still too nervous. Speaking off the top of my head just doesn't come easy.

How Surfing was Invented Allegedly

So how did surfing come to be (or not be)? That's a perfectly legitimate question, which I'm sure has a perfectly legitimate answer like the following:

One day, probably around the late 60s to early 70s because that's right about the time Hippies came into existence, there was a young man living with his mother in Hawaii. It was mid-afternoon when the young man's mother called the house. "Did you iron all of your clothes?" she asked. "Yah . . ." her son replied. "Good because when I get home I need to iron all of my clothes," the mom said.

Oh crap, thought the young man. So then he hopped in his jeep and headed down to the beach. When he reached the shore he started looking out across the waves. Whoever invented ironing sucks! he thought. At last he saw it. The ironing board he had passionately tossed into the ocean earlier that day was floating 20 feet away.

He began to swim out to the board. The waves were pretty rough, but at last he reached it. He started paddling back towards shore when a huge wave swelled up behind him and started carrying on top of it. The young man quickly jumped on the board and started moving back and forth swiftly along the waves. At last he reached the shore. When he got off the board and looked back at the ocean all he could say was "Tubular".

And that is how surfing was possibly invented. (Image brought to you by Ffffound.com)

Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! (Pop Tarts)

So guess what day it is? Oh shoot I need to check Postsecrets after this. Anyways, just found out there's no table topics topic to prepare for next week. It's an open forum. How can I prepare for table topics if I don;t know what the topic is til I'm at the club meeting. Shoots! and Ladders.

Today I would like to tell you a tale. It's a possible true story about how pop tarts came to be.

The pop tart was first invented in the late 1800s, as was everything else. One day a man was preparing breakfast when he found himself in the middle of a controversial struggle. Did he want toast or did he want a donut? Torn he began pacing around the room. A last he came to a decision.

After the toast popped out of the toaster, or watever early toast-making apparatus they had back then, the man was still not satisfied. Then he noticed some glaze set aside for the donut he could have mde and thought: What if I put the glaze on my toast? Thusly he proceeded to do so. At last he looked and said, "It's like toast, but also like a pastry. Toast. Pastery . . . Toasters Pastry!!!"

Several half centuries later the Pop Tart corporation took the concept of the Toaster's Pastry and perfected it. And that is how pop tarts possibly came into creation.

Well Crap (Part 2)

So last night, Friday night, I talked with dad and Kari. I thought bombs would go off and an air strike would come down. But instead they took me out to dinner. It was hard to see my dad's war torn face after talking about the angry texts my mom had sent him at work. But come on, what did they think would happen?

It turns out when Kari was young her parents established a rule. After she reached a certain age, if she did not have a job she could not go out anywhere. She said it was tough, but she just had to deal with it. And thusly the rule was passed on to me.

I can see that rule being justified under certain circumstances. Like if the person wasn't actively looking for a job, which I am. Or the person wanted to go out clubbing or partying with fiends, which I'm not -just trying to see my sister who flew all the way over from Arkansas on her own dime. Or if the person was wasting a lot of money on whatever trip they were taking; it costs me $20 to go to my mom's house and I don't have to pay for anything while I'm there. I would probably spend more going to Target to buy something. Or if the person were of a certain age or maturity where such a rule would need to be applied so the person could keep their priorities in focus. I've been applying to jobs like crazy and had a job interview that went well last Thursday. Monday I'm calling up AppleOne temp agency to schedule an appointment to see what jobs might be available. Also I'm 22, I don't drink or smoke, and I don;t go partying or stay up late. I'm boring - I know.

Since this morning: My sister Emily called and just said "OK" when I told her I wasn't coming. My step-sister Sarah texted asking if I was coming, and then said she was sorry I couldn't come and told me to have a good weekend. My mom texted, but had a bit more to say. She said "Are you still a prisoner?" Then when she found out I wasn't coming she said "It's just sad that your dad won't stick up for you and let you come". Then a couple hours later my grandmother called and said she didn't understand how a 22 year old could no be allowed to go where she wanted to or see her parents.

I feel like a 12 year old coward. Or a least that's what everyone else seems to be thinking of me. It's probably true. Every time growing up, when I tried to confront my mother, I just ended up getting nowhere and feeling worse off. I have no inner lion. It was caged just as soon as it was old enough to roar and now kittens sound more ferocious than me. It's hard to stand up for myself because I don't want to hurt anyones feelings and at this point I just don't know how to period.
