Thoughts for the day march 16th

Remember that no man loses any other life than this which he now lives, nor lives any other than this which he now loses. — Marcus Aurelius

Today was Toastmasters and i was actually hoping to get called up for one table topic question: What movie has made you cry and why?

Here's what I would have said:

Not that many movies have that great of an emotional impact to make a person cry. Movies that try to make a person cry go out of their way to do it and then they force it too much and you don't. I almost cried during Avatar when their home as being destroyed and the blue Avatar princess was crying over her father who was on the ground dying. It was intense scene and I really felt caught up in he moment, despite the fact that it was computer animated and on a giant theater screen in a packed room. But now when i watch the scene it's initial impact has faded and I don't feel as near to tears as I did when I first saw it.

The movies that are guaranteed to make me cry are usually Disney. The nostalgia mixed with moments in the movies that are either extremely joyful or tragic bring me to the brink. Like that moment when Bambi was running through the snow in the woods crying out for his mother and he suddenly runs into his father who tells him his mother is dead and Bambi just bows his head and crys a single tear. Who doesn't want to weap for his loss?

But the sadest movie I have ever cried to is the movie Fluke. It's ineresting because Roger who answered the TableTopic question mentioned that Lassie was the movie that always made him cry. The movie Fluke is about a DOG as well, but the brown lab is actually a man who was reincarnated into the body of a dog. Although that just sounds strange, as the story goes on the dog Fluke, keeps having visions of his wife and son and fears that they are in danger. He then travels hundreds of miles to find them and finally manages too. The wife and son take Fluke in as a pet and he struggles to go out of his way to show them who he really is. At the end of the movie, Fluke runs away because of a conflict and the son goes looking for him in the freezing snow. The son goes to his father's grave and Fluke shows up there and keeps him warm. The mom eventualy figures out where the son is and shows up to the cemetary. She immidiately rushes over to the son and gets him into the car with the heater on high and wraps him in blankets. The son doesn't say much, he just says,"Fluke said he has to go. He wants us to move on." The wife then says "Ok honey" thinking he mst be delirious. She then goes back to the grave to get Fluke. When se calls to the dog, he just stands up and turns to the grave. He starts digging in the snow at the foot of the tombstone and uncovers the words: "Here lies Tom Henderson. To my wife and son: I will always love you." Fluke then turns to the wife and stares for a moment, before turning and walking away out of the cemetary. When the wife finally realizes who he was you can't help but cry with her.
